Fruit at Every Meal

Date: Sunday, July 13th 2008. 10:30 am to 1:00 pm

Cost: $50 for Early Registration, $60 for Day-of Registration

How do you plan to get your daily dose of fruit? With fruits, as well as with vegetables, it’s a good idea to have an idea of how you enjoy eating them, at every meal. Dried, fresh, local, imported, in season, and out-of-season are all things to consider when you make a nutritional strategy. In the height of summer we have a number of great choices.

About the Menu:

Breakfast: For a light, but protein-rich breakfast, combine melon with cottage cheese and blueberries.

Lunch: Strawberries will just be going out of season, cabbage and corn just coming in. Catch them as th

ey pass one another with this salad topped with a raspberry vinaigrette.

Dinner: Perhaps the farmers still have some yams from last year, and the new carrots are coming in. Combine them with some dried fruit—prunes—and stew them together for a wonderful side dish, or perhaps a main course, if you like.

Dessert: Poached peaches or nectarines. Lightly cooking these sweet fruits with spices and liquids is a satisfying approach to dessert any time of year, using seasonal fruit.

Yoga Class + Healthy Cooking Class

Cost: $250 for all six sessions (includes yoga and cooking)

A Monthly Series at Jena Wellness

Moon Yoga Feast is about consciously participating in the cycles of nature and in the cycles of our own lives. Even if we live in a city, nature continues to affect us, like the moon’s subtle but powerful influence upon the earth. This series aims to bring us more in tune with the cycles of nature as well as our body’s own natural wisdom. We will do this through the practice of Lunar Yoga (an alternative to conventional sun salutations, Lunar Yoga is gentle and easy for beginners to learn, yet still provides a challenge) as well as other grounded movement and dance.

After our yoga practice we’ll cook a light meal together, learning to prepare the season’s fresh, local ingredients for a seasonal feast.

Moon Yoga Feast meets monthly on the Thursday evening closest to the full moon, beginning in June.

Dates:
June 19th
July 17th
August 14th
September 11th
October 16th
November 13th

Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm

"Being introduced to the world of Health Food stores and organic markets throughout the city was beneficial for me. I always had the fear that the cost of this type of food would be outrageously expensive. This was not the case, the produce, bread etc is well worth the money." - Patrick Mollin, Property Manager.

"I thoroughly enjoyed, and found very informative, the health food store and green market tour two weekends ago. I attended as a guest have now signed up for a health counseling program, so, surely, that must be some kind of testament. I particularly enjoyed the on-the-spot "interviews" conducted with stall owners at the Farmer's Market. One question elicited a prolonged and very enlightening discourse from one of the proprietors on the corporate co-opting of the word "organic" and how to find the real deal (talk to your growers). Highly recommended." - Michael Wells, writer, actor, musician

Glorious Greens!

Date: Sunday, August 10th 2008. 10:30 am to 1:00 pm

Cost: $50 for Early Registration, $60 for Day-of Registration

Once you start eating more dark, leafy greens, before you know it you will be craving them, longing for more varieties, and ways to prepare them. This class is a survey of a few different kinds of green, with recipes ranging from exceedingly simple to very simple. At the end of class we will feast on greens and you will depart dreaming of eating - you guessed it - more greens!

Steamed kale: This is the exceedingly easy recipe; yet, you might be among those who have never even held a kale stem, much less cooked it. This will be instructive.

Shredded Beets and Greens with Orange Slices: You didn’t realize that you can eat the tops too, did you? They are very nutritious and all these years you’ve been throwing them away. Learn how to consume them instead.

Bok Choy with Celery and Ginger: Ha! We sneaked in some celery here too, as if the bok choy we’re heavenly enough on their own.

Broccoli Rabe with Toasted Pecans and Currants: The sweet of the currants and the fat in the pecans offset the lovely bitter flavor of the rabe. A happy combination indeed: they also make more of the rabe’s nutrients available for your body to digest.
